The Littoral Combat Ship program of the USN had been the target of critics since it started. I personally think that these ships are excellent. Critics argue that it doesn’t carry AShMs and long range SAMs. But that’s not what it’s designed to do. The Tico and Burke take care of that part .
LCS was designed for
- Destroying swarms of fast attack craft
- Hunt quiet subs in shallow water
- Mine hunting
- Amphibious support
It does all these with great efficiency. It’s design and technology is superior to any comparable ship. But still, it is criticized because of cost overruns. That’s its only drawback. It went beyond its intended budget. But otherwise, it’s very capable. It’s mission packages are fitted according to mission requirements to engage the above-mentioned threats.
LCS is extremely important for USN because it does something what Burke and Tico can’t. Its high speed gives it a big advantage. True, it can’t survive an attack by supersonic AShM swarms. But it will be escorted by Burke when operating in a high threat environment. So it just needs basic self-defense.
